The north star: serve the audience, reason from first principles
Every decision through one lens: does this affect the audience, or does it make me look cool?
Serving the audience is 'how you get the attention of more talent and more money'; Dan lost years as a kid mimicking DVD behind-the-scenes style without grasping the goal of moving people. To learn fast, use first principles: 'find and understand the most basic components of what causes the outcome and build based on that' - an axiom is 'something observed as true and a starting point for further reasoning.' Worked example: Tesla decomposed a $600/kWh battery into nickel, carbon and cobalt priced on the London Metal Exchange - about $80/kWh. 'A foundation of logic will speed up your decision making' and, counter-intuitively, 'frees your subconscious and allows you to be more artistic.'
The same reasoning Paul applies to client work: name the outcome, decompose what causes it, stop imitating the surface.
