Day 2: Focal Length and Compression, Crop Factor, Why Not to Buy a Variable-Aperture Zoom — and What a Real Camera Gives You That a Phone Does Not

Field of view and scene compression are two different things

A wide lens spreads the room apart. A long lens pulls the background onto the subject's shoulder.

Focal length is the distance between the lens and the sensor, and it sets field of view - lower is wider, higher is tighter. Compression is a separate effect that travels with it: short focal lengths open up the space between subject and background, long ones squeeze it, which is why the same subject at the same distance can feel entirely different at 24mm and at 100mm. The practical consequence people discover the hard way is shake - 'a 20mm lens is easy to walk-and-film handheld with minimal visible shake', while a 70-200mm is almost impossible to walk with. Do not buy a variable-aperture zoom without knowing what it does
