The eight steps, and how few of them involve a camera
how-toSteps one to five happen before anyone picks up a camera.
The sequence is fixed: commit to yourself that you are doing this, get clear on the offer, pick a theme, write the script, storyboard it, produce it, edit it, release it. Grouped, that is pre-production for the first five, production for the sixth, post for the last two. Step one sounds like filler and is not - the argument is that early jobs will not be flashy and the commitment is what carries you to the ones that are. Step two, clarity on the offer, is defined unusually well: you should be able to explain it from your own perspective, the client's, 'your grandmother's' and 'a 12 year old's'. Storyboarding is framed as a single question asked of every scripted line - how can I help the viewer understand this visually.
It relocates the work: most of the quality of a commercial is decided before the shoot.
