Effect 2: Jumping Into a Mug — the Four-Layer Composite (Splash, Cutout, Shield, Hand-Hide), Seven-Frame Fall, and 'Apex Editing'

Sam Instructor, ContentCreator.com - jumps toward a mug, drops a coin for the splash, then composites it five times

The short version

  1. Two clips only - the jump and the splash - become four layers: (1) splash at the bottom, (2) a frozen, cut-out frame of the jumper animated downward, (3) a 'shield' cutout of the mug's rim/table above it so the body disappears behind the cup, (4) a masked freeze frame on top that hides the hand dropping the coin. Same mental model in all five lessons.
  2. Filming: mark the mug's centre on the floor, take the mug OUT, shoot the jump (further away or higher up reads better than an exaggerated leap), put the mug back without touching the camera, then drop a coin from as high as possible - a low hand is much harder to mask. The demo creator got 12 million views with it.
  3. The fall is two keyframes about seven frames apart, then nudged sideways for an arc; Final Cut adds a keyframed Directional blur. Timing is 'apex editing': align the visual impact, not the literal frame the coin lands, because water does not break instantly.
  4. Where the editors differ: free CapCut Desktop cannot draw a custom mask - export the freeze frame, cut it out in Adobe Express, bring it back, and accept a straight horizontal shield that clips the legs; CapCut Mobile paints the cutout with a brush; Premiere nests the cutout and animates the mask path by hand; Resolve tracks the hand mask frame-by-frame with the Tracker; Final Cut keyframes each of four control points.
  5. Finish: delete the coin-clank audio, add a 'water drop' at about -6 to -10 dB on the splash and a 'riser' before the jump; feather every mask edge.

The concepts in full

01

Film it: mark the spot, jump without the mug, splash with the mug back

how-to

Stand on a chair and you barely have to jump. Stand next to the mug and you have to fly.

Gear: camera or phone, a mug, a small heavy object (a coin, a metal bit, or an ice cube if you want no metal clank). Camera locked off - 'very important the camera does not move' - because the jump plate, the splash plate and the empty-mug reference must align pixel for pixel. Order: (1) with the mug in frame, mark its centre on the floor; (2) move the mug out of frame and shoot the jump, optionally with a set-up line ('I'm going to jump into this cup') or a look into the mug; (3) without touching the camera, put the mug back on its mark; (4) shoot a hand dropping the coin from as high as possible - a low hand entering frame 'is much harder to mask out.' Distance sells it: the farther or higher you start, the less exaggerated the jump needs to be. Creative dressing suggested: Santa into a mug of milk, cookies in hand.

Do it in this order
Why it matters

The drop-from-high rule and the floor mark are the two things that decide whether the edit takes 20 minutes or two hours.

02

The four-layer composite and the seven-frame fall

The person never enters the mug. A cutout of them slides behind a cutout of the rim.

Layer 1: the splash clip. Layer 2: the jump clip frozen one frame before the feet would land, the subject cut out (rotoscoped) so only the body remains, then animated with two position keyframes about seven frames apart, dragged down until the head is below the rim line and nudged sideways so the fall reads as an arc, not a plumb line. Layer 3: the 'shield' - a masked duplicate of the splash plate showing only the front rim/table, above the cutout, so the body vanishes behind the cup. Layer 4: a masked freeze frame from after the water settles, on top, purely to hide the hand and coin. Feather every mask edge. Timing is 'apex editing' - trim to the visual impact beat, since water does not break the instant the coin lands. A two-to-three-frame blip of body-in-front-of-rim is 'imperceptible' and not worth chasing.

Why it matters

Once Paul sees this as four layers, every 'shrink into an object' clip on TikTok becomes readable and repeatable.

Jumping Into a Mug: four layers from two clips 4 HAND-HIDE freeze frame after the water settles, masked above the hand 3 SHIELD masked duplicate of the splash: only the mug rim / table 2 CUTOUT jump frozen pre-landing, rotoscoped, 2 keyframes ~7 frames apart, arced 1 SPLASH the coin-drop plate, timed by apex editing Free CapCut: straight horizontal shield and an external cutout; Premiere/Resolve/Final Cut: drawn masks; Resolve tracks the hand-hide box
Bottom to top: splash plate, frozen cutout of the jumper animated down, the mug-rim shield, and the hand-hiding freeze frame.
03

CapCut: the free-plan workarounds (Adobe Express cutout, brush removal, straight shield)

how-to

Free CapCut Desktop cannot draw a shape. So you export one frame, cut it out elsewhere, and live with a straight line.

Desktop (free): Freeze the last pre-landing frame; Remove Background's auto removal is Pro, so Export still frames, cut the person out in Adobe Express (or Canva), drag the PNG back over the freeze and delete the original; Basic > Transform > Position keyframe at frame one, seven frames on, drag down. Shield: duplicate the splash clip to track 3, Horizontal Mask (no custom shapes without Pro's Smart Brush), invert to keep the top, feather - the straight line clips the legs slightly, 'a couple limitations.' Hand hide: duplicate the splash clip, freeze a frame after the water settles, move it to the start, Horizontal Mask above the hand, top layer, feather. Mobile (free): Overlay the jump clip (layer order inverted), Split at the pre-landing frame, Remove Background > Custom Removal > brush (size ~5) plus eraser to paint the subject, keyframe diamond then drag a few frames later (the second keyframe auto-creates); Add Overlay the splash, brush the table and mug for the shield; fourth overlay Freeze after settle, Horizontal mask + feather; split all layers at one common point to clean the head of the timeline; mute every duplicated splash.

Do it in this order
Why it matters

This is what Paul's non-technical clients will hit first; knowing the export-and-cut-out detour saves the 'CapCut can't do it' dead end.

04

Premiere Pro: Frame Hold, Nest + Transform, hand-animated Mask Path

how-to

Build the front-rim shield first, in its own sequence, so the messy part is done before the person exists.

Plan four layers. Shield: splash on V1, Effect Controls > Opacity > Pen, viewer at 100%, trace the front lip of the cup, Feather 15; cut/paste it into a new sequence 'Front Shield', main sequence renamed 'Final Project'. Jumper: right-click > Add Frame Hold one frame before landing, Pen-mask the full body, right-click > Nest, add the Transform effect (untick the box, value 180), then position keyframes stepping forward - 15 frames felt slow, 7 read right - dragging down and across for the arc. Duplicate the splash (Option-drag) for the bottom layer and delete its inherited mask; order shield top, jumper middle, splash bottom; label the shield red; Link the splash video/audio pairs so trims stay in sync; extend the shield mask backward to include the back rim with extra points and no feather for accuracy. Hand hide: Frame Hold on a settled frame on the top track, Opacity > Mask Path keyframed frame by frame to follow the body then slide off frame, feather 30 then 100. Audio: unlink and delete the clank tracks; water drop at -9.9 on the splash, riser at -10 before the jump.

Do it in this order
Why it matters

Nesting before Transform is the Premiere idiom that keeps mask and motion from fighting each other.

05

DaVinci Resolve: snowflake freeze, alpha nodes, and a Frame-mode tracked hand mask

how-to

Resolve is the one editor here that will follow the hand for you - one frame at a time.

Edit page: set the project frame rate; splash V1, jump V2. Freeze: Video > Speed Change > the snowflake icon one frame before landing. Color page: right-click > Add Alpha Output, wire the blue dots, pen a precise matte around the subject (hold the scroll wheel to pan while zoomed); Softness ~0.35; label the clip orange. Shield: Option-drag the splash above, another Alpha Output, mask the cup's front and base; apex-align both linked splash clips, disabling tracks to judge timing. Fall: Video tab > Position keyframe diamond, arrow seven frames, drag down; open the keyframe editor to add an X keyframe for a left-leaning arc. Patch the shield's missing rim with extra points. Hand hide: duplicate the splash to V4 after the hand leaves, Speed Change > Add Freeze Frame, trim to the freeze; pen a box, Alpha Output, corners above the head; Tracker panel > Frame mode, Softness 5, step frame by frame nudging the box clear of subject and splash. Audio: untick Link Clips on every duplicate and delete the clanks; water drop -8.6; riser -11.

Do it in this order
Why it matters

Resolve's tracker turns the worst chore of this effect into a nudge-and-step, and it is free.

06

Final Cut Pro: Option+F freeze, Draw Mask control points, Directional blur, Option+W gaps

how-to

Press Option+W to open a gap and every layer stops being glued to frame one.

Splash below, jump above; Option+F (Edit > Add Freeze Frame) one frame before landing, delete the rest; Effects > 'Draw Mask' onto the freeze, canvas 100%, pen around the subject. Video > Transform keyframe, Tab seven frames, drag below the rim, angle the last keyframe for the arc; Control+V opens the video animation editor to nudge keyframes (Up arrow jumps to the first). Sell the motion: Effects > 'Directional' blur, intensity 1 -> ~5 keyframed with a downward angle. Draw Mask Feather 5 then ~10. Shield: Option-drag the splash above, Draw Mask around cup/table. Timing: Option+W inserts a gap so clips slide independently; V toggles clips on/off while lining the body up behind the shield; Blade the ragged edges. Hand hide: duplicate the splash to the top, Option+F on a settled frame, keep only the freeze; Draw Mask with four points, Feather 40, then keyframe Control Points 1-4 across the fall (they turn yellow when keyed) so the mask dodges the subject; Feather 100 at the end. Audio: water drop -10, mute the rest, riser -12 ending just before impact.

Do it in this order
Why it matters

The per-corner control-point keyframing is manual, but it is the most precise of the five - worth knowing for hero shots.
