The same setup at three prices
'It doesn't come down to how much money you spend on your setup. It comes down to how many tests you filmed.'
Tier one is a window or a door, composition, and a lav microphone - and it produces a professional-looking talking head, which is the point of showing it first. Tier two, about $150 all in: a phone, a $20-30 tripod, a Yongnuo YN300 at about $70, and a $20 five-in-one reflector whose silk side does the diffusion. Tier three is the studio, with a Westcott Solix Apollo or a Godox SL60 through a large softbox and a honeycomb grid. The substitution that collapses the distance between tiers is stated plainly: a second $70 Yongnuo behind a diffusion panel stands in for the $400 Westcott with barely perceptible loss. And in a tight room a slim diffusion panel beats a softbox because it is easier to move.
