Direction, intensity, quality - the three things you control
'In front, above, into the side of their subject.'
Once white balance is handled, everything else about a light is direction, intensity or quality. Direction decides whether a face has shape: light straight on is flat or broad lighting, which removes the shadows that carry the sense of three dimensions, so the key goes in front, above and off to one side. Intensity is a relationship rather than a number - what matters is the subject against the background, not how bright the subject is on its own. Quality is hard or soft, and almost every source is hard 'straight out of the box' until something diffuses it. Midday sun is the worst case because all three are wrong at once: overhead direction, brutal intensity, undiffused quality.
Three variables replace an unbounded amount of gear anxiety.
Lighting is the number one differentiator between amateur and skilled content creators.
