Presenting Analysis: From Numbers to a Story, Writing the Analysis Email, and Matching the Chart to the Question

Kairos analytics lecturer (unnamed) Slide lecture on business analysis in an Indian retail/e-commerce context; chapter 7 of an analysis module

The short version

  1. Good analysis still has to be communicated: add percentages, write a few interpretive bullets with a comparison and end with actions - "go from a bunch of numbers to a story" (0:00-0:05).
  2. The analysis email is the first touch point: a dated, specific subject, a named addressee, a findings snapshot, actions, and a descriptive file name - not "PFA" and "Book1" (0:05-0:11).
  3. Choose visuals by question: pie for share, area for trend plus composition, waterfall for a bridge from A to B, grouped bars for you versus competitors; exercise and a two-slide deck assignment (0:11-0:20).

01

From a table to a story with actions

how-to

"Do not repeat stuff on a slide."

Returns example: 5,400 sold, 1,410 returned (26.1%). Bullets: returns 26%, lower than last year; about 70% of returns are size-related and rising; roughly 43% of returns (wrong size received, damaged in transit) are within the company's control - so tighten QC; the biggest bucket, customers ordering the wrong size, needs customer-journey work and a deeper study. The same thinking shapes the email: subject "November 23 Diwali sales analysis", "Hi Kumar", a snapshot (revenue up year on year on traffic growth, top categories), actions for the next sale, and a file named for its content.

Do it in this order
Why it matters

Analysis that gets read and acted on.

02

Match the chart to the question

"Don't be afraid to try out new types of charts."

Pie: category share (t-shirts about a third of sales). Area: Apple revenue by business over quarters - iPhone growing, iPod shrinking. Revenue-cost-profit chart coloured blue, red, green. Waterfall: growing 50 to 75 crores via market growth, new products and marketing, with negative steps allowed. Pictorial charts for markets and price bands. Exercise: a beauty brand's nail paints and mascara by region versus two competitors - grouped bars show it leads nail paints in North and South but trails in the East, and is a close second in mascara with a gap in the North, so you know where to dig. Assignment: a two-slide leadership deck from the chapter 4 dataset.

Why it matters

Visuals that cut the reader's effort instead of adding to it.
