The financing menu and when each option fits
Friends and family is fast and needs no valuation. It also may not set up your next round. Nothing on this menu is free of trade-offs.
Decide how much (milestones, customer segment) and when first. Options: friends and family; HNIs and angels (senior founders, experts, family offices - more capital and value-add); crowdfunding and angel-pooling platforms (maybe Rs 1-1.5 crore); accelerators and incubators (3-4 months, demo day); VC funds (pre-seed to large rounds). Non-dilutive: loans against property, assets or invoices if margins can service them. Strategic partners and corporate venture arms (acquisition risk). Convertible notes (debt converting later; common with accelerators). Venture debt (for funded or profitable firms; interest, sometimes warrants, revenue-based). Later: strategic tie-ups, IPO (quarterly scrutiny, fiduciary duties), asset-based financing (ring-fence a factory for a new market). Match the instrument to the need and ambition.
