Airport Operations: runways, traffic patterns, signs, and airport data sources
The short version
- The point of this section is not to make you an airport pilot - it is so you can PREDICT where manned aircraft will be when you fly near one, because you must yield to all of them.
- Runway numbers are MAGNETIC heading with the last digit dropped. They change over time as the magnetic pole drifts - which is itself the exam's favourite proof that they are magnetic, not true.
- The traffic pattern has five legs - upwind, crosswind, downwind, base, final - flown at about 1,000 ft AGL. LEFT turns are standard; right patterns must be published.
- Four sources of airport data - Chart Supplement, NOTAMs, ATIS/AWOS, and aeronautical charts.
- The instructor openly says the taxiway and runway sign material is unnecessary for drone pilots but is on the exam, so learn it anyway.
