Hyperventilation, fatigue, dehydration: numbers and countermeasures

Thirst is a lagging indicator - by the time you feel it, you've already lost 2% of your body weight in water.

HYPERVENTILATION: stress-triggered rapid breathing floods O2 and dumps CO2 - lightheadedness, finger tingling, hot-then-cold, and muscle spasms (grim with a controller in your hands), up to unconsciousness. Fix by restoring CO2: deliberately slow the breath, rebreathe into a bag, talk out loud.

FATIGUE: 'there is no amount of training or experience that can overcome fatigue' - the exam-flagged line against push-through culture. Acute fatigue from hypoxia (8,000-10,000 ft field elevations count), stress, or fuel-less long missions; chronic fatigue (weakness, palpitations, breathlessness, headaches, irritability) means a physician, not a flight. Night adds its own multipliers: alcohol, off-schedule exhaustion, and tobacco - whose carbon monoxide steals the red blood cells night vision runs on.

DEHYDRATION: heat, wind, dry air, and diuretics (caffeine, alcohol) drive it; 2-4 quarts across the day, and in heat-stress conditions the FAA's rates are 1 quart/hour severe, 1 pint/hour moderate. Past dehydration lies heat stroke - the body losing temperature control entirely.

Eighty percent of flying is seeing — and eyes only detect motion when still

Sweep the sky smoothly and you'll miss the aircraft moving through it - motion detection needs a stopped eye.

Vision carries ~80% of flight information. Dark adaptation: 30 minutes to earn, one flash to lose

At night the exact center of your gaze is your worst eye. Look slightly away from the thing you want to see.

Cone-dense central vision fails in darkness, leaving a functional central blind spot - the off-center viewing technique aims the rod-rich periphery at the target. The adaptation clock: cones max out in minutes; rods overtake at 7-8 minutes (switch to peripheral scanning then) and reach full sensitivity at 25-30. The catch: ANY bright-light exposure bleaches the retina and restarts the entire clock. Field discipline: sunglasses before dusk, no staring at strobes or headlights, screens dimmed before launch, supplemental oxygen helping at high field elevations - and preflight by RED or GREEN light, whose wavelengths spare the rods, never white.

Four night illusions — including the one your own strobe causes

Stare at your drone's strobe for ten seconds and your brain will set it in motion - autokinesis is an illusion you bring to the flight.

AUTOKINESIS: a fixed light against darkness 'moves' after 8-10 seconds of fixation - which describes staring at your own drone precisely. Counter: never fixate past 10 seconds, refocus at varying distances, cycle attention to the controller. FALSE HORIZON: a line of city or boat lights reads as the horizon and induces an unfelt turn - he's experienced it himself eastbound over Florida. The night playbook: lights, lost-link drill, and airspace after the tower sleeps

The same airport that demands authorization at noon may be free airspace at midnight - or the reverse. The Chart Supplement's Zulu hours are the only way to know which.

Since April 6, 2021: night flight without a waiver, qualified by night questions on the initial exam or the free FAAsafety.gov training, and equipped with an anti-collision light visible 3 STATUTE MILES with a collision-avoiding flash rate, lit sunset to sunrise. A downward landing light does not qualify. Colors and count are free (red-left/green-right recommended); the light exists for OTHERS to see you. VOs: optional post-2021, recommended anyway.

The lost-VLOS-at-night drill, in order: STOP moving; verify telemetry on the controller; climb straight up (if safe and legal) to clear obstructions; dispatch the VO to last-known position; LISTEN for it; if the anti-collision light has failed, return-to-home immediately; when regained, land and investigate.

Night airspace: uncontrolled = no request; B/C/D/E2 = authorization via FAA DroneZone - LAANC didn't serve night at recording; E4 extensions = free. And the after-hours twist worked in two examples: Prescott (Class D by day) becomes one large E2 at night - authorization REQUIRED after dark; Winslow (E2 by day) reverts to Class G - free at night.
