Weather Services: METARs, TAFs, briefings and flight category
The short version
- A METAR is an OBSERVATION (what is happening now). A TAF is a FORECAST (what is expected). Both are heavily tested and both are genuinely useful in the field.
- Flight categories - VFR is ceiling above 3,000 ft AND visibility above 5 SM; Marginal VFR is 1,000-3,000 ft and 3-5 SM; IFR is below 1,000 ft or below 3 SM.
- Ceiling means only BROKEN or OVERCAST (or vertical visibility). Few and scattered layers are never a ceiling - a favourite exam trap.
- METAR wind is referenced to TRUE north; runway numbers are MAGNETIC. Do not mix them.
