Towered vs untowered, and who's talking on CTAF
Most US airports have no tower at all - nobody directs the traffic. The system still works because everyone announces themselves into the same frequency.
First split: TOWERED fields have ATC and manned aircraft MUST communicate; UNTOWERED fields have no controller - radio use is recommended, not required, over a shared Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF, often the UNICOM frequency). Second split: civil (public), military/federal (closed), private (permission required). For a drone pilot the payoff is situational: knowing which kind of field is nearby tells you whether a controller exists to coordinate with and how predictable the traffic will be.
