Fitness is self-certified — and alcohol has three separate tripwires
Eight hours sober, feeling rough: still illegal. The hangover clause has no clock.
As PIC you alone determine medical fitness - nobody signs you off. The alcohol tests are INDEPENDENT: 8 hours bottle-to-throttle; 0.04% BAC; and impairment 'regardless of time' - which is how a hangover grounds you at hour twelve, with alcohol measurable up to 16 hours. Impairment's signature set: poor judgment, decreased responsibility and coordination, tunnel vision, diminished memory, reduced reasoning, shortened attention. Drugs extend past the illegal: antihistamines and decongestants cause 'cognitive deficiency,' and the operating-machinery label warning IS the ruling. The FAA's substance lists (91.17/91.19 territory) and aviation medical examiners settle doubts; I'M SAFE runs before every flight.
The three-tripwire structure is the exam question; the label-warning rule is the one people break innocently.
