Radio Communications: listening to aviation traffic as a remote pilot

  1. You may LISTEN to aviation frequencies but you may NOT TRANSMIT on them. Transmitting requires an FCC licence; the only exception is a genuine emergency.
  2. The point of the chapter is situational awareness - decoding a position report tells you exactly where a manned aircraft is and roughly how high.
  3. Numbers are spoken digit by digit. Altitudes below 18,000 ft are spelled out ("one zero thousand five hundred"), never "ten thousand five hundred".
