Section 7: Charts — Reading the Sectional Like a Local

Greg Lead instructor. Calls the FAA's own handbook chapter on charts 'pretty weak,' which is why he walks live sectionals on SkyVector for most of the section - including a 2008 paper Miami sectional from his own flight bag to prove the format hasn't changed.

The short version

  1. Three charts, one that matters: the SECTIONAL (1:500,000, valid 56 days - formerly six months), the TAC (1:250,000 zoom for Class B metros), the WAC (1:1,000,000, yearly, 'not really something you would need'). Paper is dying; SkyVector.com is the free living chart.
  2. The legend is the cheat code - every symbol, color, and airspace style is decoded on the chart's own front panel, and the exam supplement reprints it as Appendix 1.

Terrain colors are chart-local; MEF is the quadrant's worst-case number

Green means low - but Phoenix green and Florida green are calibrated to different worlds. The corner legend is the only truth.

Relief comes as contours plus color, and the color scale is calibrated PER CHART: the Phoenix sectional runs green to maroon topping at Mt. Humphreys' 12,633 ft; Florida's tops around 720, so everything reads green. Check the corner legend, never assume.

The MEF (Maximum Elevation Figure) in each half-degree quadrant is the highest thing in it - terrain OR tower OR tree - rounded UP to the next hundred (margin rules differ for natural vs man-made; he deliberately skips the details). Format: big digit thousands, small digit hundreds - '12 over 5' reads 12,500. Phoenix example: 12,633-ft peak yields MEF 13,000; a flat Florida quadrant reads 800 courtesy of one obstacle near Okeechobee.

Airport symbology: blue towers, magenta traps, and the data block in order

Magenta means no tower. It does NOT mean no authorization - the exam knows you'll conflate them.

Colors: BLUE = operating control tower; MAGENTA = everything else. The trap he flags: untowered magenta airports can still sit inside surface Class E (E2) - color signals tower, not airspace. Shapes: hard-surface runways 1,500-8,069 ft live inside a circle ('8,069 is the scale that would fit inside of that tiny little circle'); longer runways get drawn to shape. Data-block decode questions are near-certain on the exam - and this is the sixty-second airport briefing you'll do before every real flight near a field.

Airspace ink: line styles that carry the whole classification system

P, R, and W areas share the exact same comb-toothed line - one letter is all that separates 'call first' from 'never.'

Victor Airways: the 8-mile Class E highways — and the layering skill

A blue line labeled V99 is an invisible highway 8 nautical miles wide - and the exam will ask you where its floor is over THIS exact spot.

VORs (the compass-rose symbols, tech being phased out) anchor VICTOR AIRWAYS - 'V' plus a number, drawn VOR to VOR. Classification: Class E from 1,200 AGL up to but not including 18,000 MSL, 4 NM each side of centerline. The historical residue: before Class E defaulted to 1,200 nationwide, airways needed their own designation - redundant now, still tested ('where does Class E airspace start? 1,200 feet').

The real skill is LAYERING: one point can sit on an airway AND inside Class D AND under a 700-ft E shelf - the governing floor is the most local/restrictive charted value, never automatically 1,200. One of his worked points lands in Four Peaks Wilderness, where the airspace class is irrelevant: drones banned outright. Obstacle math: MSL over (AGL), and the 400-above rule's chart form

Two numbers under every tower: the top one is for pilots' altimeters, the parenthesized one is for you.

Symbols tier by height (<1,000 ft AGL, >=1,000, wind turbines, grouped clusters), lightning bolt = lit, UC = under construction. Each carries height MSL on top and (AGL) beneath; MSL minus AGL = the ground's own elevation. Worked: 6,792 MSL over (355) = base at 6,437. The drone application: you may climb to 400 ft above a charted obstacle's TOP - but only in Class G, tying back to 107.51's structure exception. Exam note from the worked Savannah question: when the FAA asks the obstacle's 'height,' the expected answer used the MSL figure - read the question's reference frame carefully.

The rest of the map: yellow cities, diamond stadiums, and the Mode C decoy

The ring around a big airport that LOOKS like Class C but isn't - the Mode C veil - exists purely to trap the unwary on exam day.

VFR waypoints (flags/stars) mark where manned traffic funnels - density warnings for you. Diamonds are STADIUMS, carrying the 3 NM / 3,000 ft TFR association. Charted power lines and cables are the physical hazard layer for site surveys. Yellow shading = densely populated - the over-people caution zone. Dotted lake outlines mean intermittent water; small lake numbers are surface MSL (seaplane data). Parachute icons, aerobatic 'A' symbols, glider/ultralight letters mark activity areas. The flagged decoy: the MODE C ring around big airports is an equipment requirement for MANNED aircraft - visually near Class C, legally unrelated.

Latitude, longitude, and the decimal-degree exam trap

46.9 degrees north is NOT 46 degrees 9 minutes - and the FAA writes questions counting on exactly that mistake.

Orientation: latitude parallels the equator (0-90 N/S; his hook - 'latitude is only two letters off from altitude,' both run bottom to top); longitude runs pole to pole from Greenwich (0-180 E/W). Degrees split into 60 minutes, minutes into 60 seconds - 'think about degrees as hours.'
