Google Display and Performance Max: Reach Beyond Search, Responsive Display Ads, Measuring Beyond Last Click, PMax Inputs and Value Modes

Kaushik Sandeka Marketing strategist at Google (~3 years, UK/EMEA advertisers), ~8-9 years in digital marketing (CleverTap, Acko-type insurer retention); Growth School performance-marketing mentor

The short version

  1. Display reaches people in the 96% of online time not spent searching, via Google properties and AdSense partner sites; remarketing is its prime use (0:03-0:15).
  2. Targeting with Google audiences and audience signals plus smart bidding; Responsive Display Ads mix 5 images, 5 headlines, 5 descriptions into 300+ combinations; measure on view-through and all conversions, not CTR (0:09-0:43).
  3. Performance Max runs one campaign across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps from your inputs; best practices, new-customer value modes, account diagnostics and live creation (0:43-1:50).

The concepts in full

01

Display reach, targeting signals and Responsive Display Ads

People search about 4% of their online time; display covers the other 96%.

Display runs on Google and partner sites that monetise through AdSense, plus YouTube and Gmail; its classic job is remarketing cart and checkout abandoners. Audience signals (first-party lists, custom and Google audiences) guide but do not limit targeting - a travel brand's signal can expand into adventure hiking. Smart bidding reportedly gets 20% more conversions than manual. Responsive Display Ads take 5+ images, headlines and descriptions, 2+ logos and ideally a video, and assemble each ad live. The trainer's insurance renewal case rose from 3.5% to 17.8% by personalising by vehicle and days to expiry.

Why it matters

Personalisation and asset coverage are the levers that matter on display.

02

Measure display on view-through and all conversions, not CTR

"Click-through rate or click-based attribution should be the last way of measurement."

People see display while doing something else, so last click makes it look useless. A view-through conversion is someone who saw but did not click and converted later; cost per all conversions counts them. The same lens applies to YouTube and Demand Gen (not Shopping, which is lower funnel). Check Goals > Conversions > attribution model and switch to data-driven.

Why it matters

Most brands, the trainer says, measure display wrongly.

03

Performance Max: inputs in, channels out

People search, stream, shop and scroll - PMax follows all four.

Supply a conversion goal matching the business (online sales, leads, store sales), value-based bidding when revenue is tracked (target ROAS or maximise conversion value) or target CPA when it is not, the maximum number of headlines, descriptions, images and videos per asset group, search themes instead of keywords, and audience signals. Customer-acquisition modes bid more for new customers, high-value new customers or lapsed ones (win-back). Cited Google figures: ad strength poor to excellent +6% conversions, at least one video +12%. The trainer's rule: a new business can "treat PMax as an agency"; an established brand with specialists should use it only partly.

Why it matters

The default AI campaign; inputs decide whether it works.

04

Reading and building Display and PMax in the account

how-to

Target CPA 600, actual 851: raise the target to enter more auctions.

In the Growth School account: RDA asset ratings, audience insights (an index of segments more common among converters), demand forecasts, auction insights (impression share versus competitors). PMax diagnostics: optimisation-score recommendations (budget, final URL expansion, asset refresh, vertical video), top signals (regions and times that convert), locations to exclude. The PMax creation run ended with "Operation is not permitted for current customer".
