Choosing a Meta Campaign Objective: the Six Objectives, Objective versus Metric, and Three Questions

Harshit Vadiparti AI consultant and ex-founder ("member of Forbes Technical Council"); narrates every module as a Meta Ads Manager screen-share

The short version

  1. The objective is the first decision and tells Meta which people to chase - "if you choose traffic, Meta looks for people likely to click... sales, people likely to buy" (0:00-0:02).
  2. Six objectives: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion, Sales - each walked on the real Create dialog (0:02-0:08).
  3. The objective drives delivery; metrics only describe results. Pick it with three questions: what action, can I track it, where is this person in their journey (0:08-0:12).

01

The six objectives and what each one optimises for

The objective is an instruction to the algorithm about which people to find.

Awareness shows the ad to people most likely to remember it - judge it by attention, not sales. Traffic optimises for the click and visit (site, app, Messenger or WhatsApp). Engagement chases comments, shares, messages, video views - middle funnel. Leads collects contact details by instant form, sign-up or message - for services with a follow-up team. App promotion is only for businesses with an app. Sales targets likely buyers and leans on tracking, so it "works best once you have some kind of traffic and tracking history in place."

Why it matters

Picking the objective is picking who Meta will spend your money reaching.

02

The objective drives delivery; the metric only keeps score

Want sales, left it on awareness? You will get lots of cheap views from people who never buy.

Reach, clicks and purchases are numbers you read afterwards; the objective changes who Meta shows the ad to. Asking for sales with no tracking or purchase history makes Meta struggle the other way. Name the business goal out loud first, then let it point to the objective.

Why it matters

The most expensive setting to get wrong, and invisible in the numbers until you check it.

03

Three questions before you choose an objective

how-to

Notice, click, interact, inquire or buy - pick the verb first.

The objective then flows down: ad-set options, optimisation and what counts as a result all change with it ("the audience, the placement and even how budget is spent all flow downward").

Do it in this order
Why it matters

A repeatable way to choose without guessing.
