NotebookLM Panels, Sources and Citations: Up to 300 Sources, Discover Sources, Renaming, and Tracing Answers

Karan Rana Brand/marketing manager, YouTuber, podcaster and course creator ("a non-tech guy"); presents the AI for Marketing, NotebookLM and Manus tool guides

The short version

  1. Three panels: Sources (filing cabinet), Chat (centre) and Studio (generation); up to 300 sources per notebook, about 150 million words (0:01-0:05).
  2. Discover sources ("I'm feeling curious" or a topic) imports ten web sources in one click (0:08-0:10).
  3. Rename sources descriptively so citations are traceable; clicking a citation highlights the supporting passage (0:11-0:15).

At a glance, three clicks deep

Skim here first: the closed row is the glance, open is the study card with the key points and timestamps, and the ↓ link drops to that concept's full write-up below.

01

The 300-source notebook and Discover sources

how-to

Studio is "any place where creation happens."

The demo starts from a single product-page URL, then uses Discover sources > "I'm feeling curious", which found and imported ten sources on the neuroscience of "aha moments" (progress rings turn to ticks). NotebookLM can also read charts and images inside PDFs. The trainer is on a Pro plan with higher limits; free-plan numbers are not given.

Do it in this order
Why it matters

Builds a research base in minutes.

02

Rename sources and trace every answer

Name it "Q4 2024 sales report.pdf", not "document1.pdf".

Three-dot menu > Rename (e.g. "neuro marketing research"). Asking for "top three neurological explanations related to dopamine in short bullets" returned cited bullets; clicking citation 10 jumped to the purple-highlighted line. Practical rules: start with one project, name sources well, and wait before acting on generated summaries (his "24-hour rule").

Why it matters

Verification is what makes a grounded tool trustworthy.
