ChatGPT Overview: Origins and Adoption, Learning from Feedback, the Model Selector, Custom GPTs and Memory

Karan Rana Brand/marketing manager, YouTuber, podcaster and course creator ("a non-tech guy"); presents the AI for Marketing, NotebookLM and Manus tool guides

The short version

  1. From OpenAI (2015) to ChatGPT on GPT-3.5 (November 2022): a million users in five days and 100 million in two months; GPT-4 and Plus in March 2023 (0:00-0:04).
  2. Adoption claims as of mid-2025 (400M weekly users, 10M paying Plus users) and why it took off: simple UI, conversational tone, versatility, a free tier (0:04-0:08).
  3. Dashboard tour: threads and rename, the GPT store and custom GPTs, the model selector (GPT-4o for everyday, o3 for reasoning), and Memory in settings (0:08-0:13).

He describes reinforcement learning from human feedback as the model improving as people tell it what was wrong - like coaching an intern.

The concepts in full

01

Learning from feedback - the intern analogy

"Task one was not done truly properly" - and the next attempt improves.

This is a simplified picture: training-time RLHF shapes the model in advance, while in-chat feedback mainly affects the current conversation (and Memory, if on). Thumbs-up/down feedback still helps the vendor improve models.

Why it matters

A mental model for why phrasing feedback clearly matters.

02

Model selector, custom GPTs and Memory - the map

A prompt "is what you want to do to it".

At recording: GPT-4o "great for most tasks", o3 "uses reasoning ... tells you why it is giving you an answer", with new models "every two months or so". The GPT store holds custom GPTs (e.g. Canva's); a custom GPT stores a name, description and instructions. Settings > Personalization > Memory > reference saved memories. Threads are auto-named and can be renamed.

Why it matters

Orientation before the feature lessons.
