Google Search Ads Fundamentals: Ad Rank and Quality Score, Extensions, Account Structure, Match Types and Smart Bidding

Kaushik Sandeka Marketing strategist at Google (~3 years, UK/EMEA advertisers), ~8-9 years in digital marketing (CleverTap, Acko-type insurer retention); Growth School performance-marketing mentor

The short version

  1. Ad Rank = max CPC bid x Quality Score: $3 x 9 beats $6 x 2. Quality Score (1-10) comes from expected CTR, ad relevance and landing page experience; aim for 8+ (0:19-0:34).
  2. Extensions (sitelinks, call, callout, structured snippets, price, lead form) mapped to objectives; structure every category into brand, generic and competitor campaigns; exact, phrase and broad match plus negatives (0:34-1:02).
  3. AI broad match pairs with Smart Bidding; choose Maximize Conversions, target CPA, target ROAS or impression share from the business model; live account diagnostics, Report editor and the create flow (1:02-1:48).

The concepts in full

01

Ad Rank and Quality Score

Bid $3 with quality 9 (27) and you beat a $6 bid with quality 2 (12).

You pay per click, but money alone does not win the auction. Expected CTR is Google's prediction from your copy and the industry; relevance asks whether the ad matches the search (a hospital bidding "top neurosurgeon in Bangalore" with "best hospital" copy fails); landing page experience asks whether the page delivers the exact thing promised (not a whole catalogue). Each shows as good / average / below average; below 8 overall, "expect that your CPCs will be shooting up." Optimisation score is a different number.

Why it matters

The cheapest way to lower CPC is to raise quality.

02

Ad extensions and which to use for which objective

Sitelinks lift CTR 10-20% - 20-50% on brand searches, per the trainer.

Any objective: sitelinks, callouts (up to four, 25 characters, "hygiene" like "24x7 service"), structured snippets. Sales: image, price, promotion. Contact: lead form (two or three questions) and call (scheduled by day and time). App: app extension. Traffic: location and affiliate location. For retail products, Shopping ads usually take the click instead.

Why it matters

Cheap CTR gains that also feed Quality Score.

03

Account structure: brand, generic and competitor campaigns

Brand keywords perform "extremely high" - mixed with generic, they hide the truth.

Myntra-style: campaigns for women's, men's, kids; ad groups for shirts, jackets; then separate campaigns for generic ("men's shirt blue"), brand ("Zara black dress") and competitor terms. For a marketplace, "your brands" are everything it sells. The trainer estimates "70 to 75% of global brands" lack this, making root-cause analysis hard.

Why it matters

Clean structure is what makes every later diagnosis possible.

04

Match types, negatives, DSA - and AI broad match

Five-plus-word searches grew 8x in two to three years - you cannot list them all.

"Formal shoes": exact matches "formal shoe", phrase matches "men's formal shoes", broad matches "men's wingtips" but not running shoes. Dynamic Search Ads crawl your site to write headlines; exact keywords serve before DSA, which competes evenly with phrase and broad. Broad match was redesigned around Google's language models and Smart Bidding and is theme-aware, routing "roses for sale" to the Roses ad group; a 2021 study: exact to broad +35% conversions on target CPA. "Use it very tactically."

Why it matters

Coverage of long-tail intent without endless keyword lists.

05

Choosing a Smart Bidding strategy from the business model

Revenue business: target ROAS. Conversion business: target CPA.

Netflix (one or two fixed plans) fits target CPA; Myntra (variable basket) fits target ROAS; a re-launch like Shein can maximise clicks behind a strong offer; a festival sale wanting the top slot uses impression share - "very expensive". Data thresholds are stated loosely: about 15-30 conversions in 30 days minimum, 50 recommended. Enhanced CPC is "no longer the best solution."

Why it matters

Picks the bidding lever from the economics.

06

Diagnosing a search account in the UI

how-to

13% impression share with 0% lost to budget means you are losing on rank, not money.

Demo on dummy Growth School data: optimisation score 81.1, a campaign limited by budget (800 a day, 2,200 recommended), another limited by its target ROAS. Add Quality Score, expected CTR, ad relevance and landing page columns at keyword level; add search impression share and lost IS (rank, budget) at campaign level; build templates and bar charts in Report editor. The create flow was cut short by account permissions.
