Meta Ad Placements: Advantage+ (Automatic) versus Manual, Platforms, Feeds, Stories and Reels, Devices

Harshit Vadiparti AI consultant and ex-founder ("member of Forbes Technical Council"); narrates every module as a Meta Ads Manager screen-share

The short version

  1. Placements live at the ad-set level. Advantage+ placements (default) spread budget across every placement; manual lets you switch them off (0:01-0:03).
  2. Start with Advantage+ - "automatic is a smart move by default and manual is the tool you graduate into" - and go manual only for format-specific creative or data-backed waste (0:05-0:06).
  3. Manual view: six platforms, feeds, stories and reels (needs 9:16), devices; preview every placement; value rules weight placements (0:05-0:12).

The concepts in full

01

Advantage+ placements by default, manual when you have a reason

"Let Meta explore first, learn what works, and only then take manual control if needed."

Create > Awareness > Continue opens the ad-set editor with the two options. Advantage+ uses Meta's data to find cheaper results than guessing. Go manual when the creative only makes sense in one format (a vertical video for Reels and Stories) or when data shows a placement wasting money. Value rules (create a rule set, acknowledge "cost per result may increase", pick placements, optionally raise the bid) let you weight placements without switching them off - shown but not explained in depth.

Why it matters

The default protects beginners from starving Meta of inventory.

02

Platforms, feeds, stories and reels, devices

Stories and Reels want a real 9:16 vertical, "not a recycled square feed image."

Platform checkboxes: Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Threads, Audience Network (Facebook and Instagram are where most beginners focus). Feeds support almost every format - "if you only understand one placement, let feed be the one." Devices default to all; narrow only for a reason. The preview pane shows the ad per placement; a square image looks fine in feed but gets bars full-screen. Mistakes: over-restricting, one square image everywhere, dismissing Audience Network when "it can quietly add cheap reach."

Why it matters

Mismatched shapes are the most common silent waste in placements.
